The redesign of AkronChildrens.org considered four fundamental challenges:
- Graphic User Interface: The previous sites graphic user interface (originally created ~ 1994) supported a well structured site taxonomy, but needed to be refreshed with a new aesthetic look & feel and a technologically updated simple, efficient user interface. The key challenge lied in not disrupting the current user populations ability to find existing content with the launch of a redesigned site.
- Audience-based Content Segregation: The previous Web site provided content relevant to four audiences: Patient Parents, Patients, The Media and Employees. In addition to these audiences, the redesign considered Healthcare Professionals (Physicians, Nursing and Allied Healthcare Professionals) and the underlying content management system (eyemg.Compose) provides for efficient revisions in the future.
- Search Engine Optimization: The eyemg.Compose content management system provides for simple, efficient maintenance of human read and machine read content to ensure that the site is indexed by major search engines and that the indexing is optimized to support search performance for key phrases related to content of local, regional and national interest.
- Content Creation & Publishing: The previous AkronChildrens.org Web site represents ~ 10 years of marketing communications and partner efforts to create an appropriate site taxonomy and supporting content elements. This work resulted in an online presence that services a wide variety of hospital communications needs. The adoption of the Web site as a lead communications vehicle for the hospital created pressure on the marketing communications department to define, create and maintain an increasing variety and quantity of Web-content. This increased pressure coupled to the current multi-stage, manual content development, approval and publishing workflow has created a significant bottleneck for departments seeking Web delivery of key messages. Integration of a Web-based development, approval and publishing process will allow Akron Children's Hospital communications professionals to leverage the Web site as the lead communications tool for the hospital.

Human Resources
With over 600 medical staff and an increasingly competitive field, the human resources staff must utilize the Web site to find and prequalify appropriate talented candidates.
